Getting to Tignes, France for your Skiing and Snowboarding Holiday

Tignes is 165kms south of Geneva and 160kms northwest of Turin (Italy) in the Rhone-Alpes region of France, and is only directly accessible by road. The quickest way here is to fly to Geneva and transfer by hire car or bus, while self-drive and international rail travel are also popular.

Chambery Airport is the closest, but Geneva-Cointrin has better flight and transfer options. Buses regularly go to Tignes from the airport; while trains go as far as Bourg-Saint-Maurice, from where buses go to the resort. By hire car, follow the E-25 all the way to Pre-St-Didier in Italy, and then take the SS-26 back into France and follow the signs to Tignes (170kms; three hours).

If you’re driving from the UK, the quickest route from the port of Calais uses major autoroutes (motorways) through Reims, Dijon and Annemasse (Geneva) before following the E-25 and the route as above. The distance is 975kms and journey times may vary depending on the time of the season, due to congestion on the route down from Geneva; however, the journey should take between 10 and 12 hours.

Travelling by train from the UK is very efficient, especially in the winter as there is a direct service to Bourg-Saint-Maurice (nearest station to Tignes) from London, taking about 10 hours. Buses go from Bourg to Tignes. Another option has a regular Eurostar service from London to Paris, from where a high-speed TGV goes to Annecy and a regional train goes to Bourg.
