Getting to Whiteface Mountain Lake Placid, USA for your Skiing and Snowboarding Holiday

Whiteface Mountain is 470kms north of New York and about 15kms from Lake Placid, and is directly accessible by road only. Self-drive is straightforward enough and you can get part of the way here by train; while the easiest option is to fly to Adirondack Airport and take a shuttle transfer.

The nearest airport is at Lake Placid and is suitable for light aircraft only; while Adirondack Regional Airport is regularly served by Continental commuter service. Free shuttle buses run to Whiteface from Lake Placid, and buses and taxis run to the resort from the airport. Whiteface Mountain is about 40kms from the airport via routes 55, 18, 48, 18A and 431.

If travelling by road from New York, take the Palisades Interstate Parkway and then I-87 to exit 30, from where routes 9, 12 and 431 go to Whiteface (470kms; six hours). From Montréal, follow autoroute 15 (south) to the US border, where I-87 continues south to exit 34 and routes 9 and 431 head west to the resort (170kms; two hours). Boston is 435kms along I-93, I-89, I-87 and route 9.

Trains stop at Westport on the New York City–Montréal line (60kms from Whiteface), from where a shuttle runs to the resort. The Montréal-bound Amtrak train leaves New York’s Penn station at 08:15 and arrives in Westport at 13:55. From Montréal, the return train to New York leaves at 09:50 and arrives in Westport at 13:40. A daily Greyhound Lines bus also leaves for Lake Placid from New York at 10:30 and arrives at 17:50.
