Hintertux and Mayrhofen ski resorts, set in the Zillertal Valley of the skiing-rich state of Tyrol, are serviced by three nearby airports and a private railway. The easiest way to get here is to fly to Innsbruck and transfer by bus, or fly to Münich and hire a car. Trains from London go via Paris, Zürich, Innsbruck and Jenbach, and self-drive is also a popular option.
The nearest international airport is Salzburg, but Münich’s FJ Strauss Airport receives more flights, both charter and scheduled, from around the world. Trains go via Münich, Innsbruck and Jenbach; the Jenbach-Mayrhofen leg is a private line and isn’t convenient. Hiring a car from Münich Airport is a more attractive option. Innsbruck airport is the closest, but only receives flights from Austrian and major European cities.
By car from Münich Airport, take the A-9, A-99 (bypass), A-8, A-93, and A-12 autobahns, exiting at junction 39 onto the B-169 for Mayrhofen (200kms, two hours). From Salzburg, take the A-8 (Münich-Salzburg) autobahn as far as the southbound A-93. The A-93 leads onto the A-12 where you need to exit onto the B-16 at junction 39, as above. Self-drive from Calais involves a two day journey of 1,130kms.
If you want to travel all the way by train you’ll have to switch to the private, light-rail track from Jenbach to Mayrhofen. Eurostar trains go from London’s Waterloo station (10:29 and 17:09) to Paris, from where a high-speed TGV and the later overnight train go to Zürich. From Zürich, several trains a day go to Innsbruck, and onwards to Jenbach.
