Arefjallen is Sweden's most popular resort, with an established and well maintained ski area over 100kms of groomed pistes. Situated next to a large frozen lake, the resort is perfect for revellers and families alike and has a range of non-ski alternatives and après-ski activities on offer.
A training ground for ski enthusiasts, Arefjallen is a renowned resort catering for visitors of all levels. There are 23,000 beds in traditional Alpine style accommodation and modern hotels, plus dozens of restaurants and nightclubs, and a ski school which sets and maintains a commendable standard.
Arefjallen has first-class ski facilities, with 99 excellent slopes totalling 100kms of ski runs. Of these, 12 are green, 42 are blue, 35 are red and five are black. The longest run at the resort measures 6.5kms with the total vertical descent being 890m. There are 43 lifts, including the only cable car in Sweden.
These service the resort and have an uplift capacity of 48,000 skiers per hour and a top elevation of 1,274m. For something a little more challenging, there are a further 56kms of cross-country trails plus excellent facilities for boarders. These consist of a half-pipe, five quarter-pipes, a snowboard park, a snow-cross course and two fun parks.
When away from the slopes, try one of the abundant non-ski alternatives at the resort which include activities such as: ice-fishing; dog-sledding; paragliding; hang-gliding; snowmobile touring; horseback riding, ice-climbing and windsurfing on snow. Then again, just relax and take it easy at one of the many restaurants both on and off the mountain, or take part in the après-ski, with its numerous cafés, bars and clubs.
The season begins in early November and continues through until late May. The best conditions are usually around March and April with excellent long sunny days providing a great backdrop.
Arefjallen lies 620kms north of Stockholm and 100kms from the nearest town of Östersund. Fly to Östersund via Stockholm and transfer by hire vehicle or pre-booked transfer service to the resort.
