Berchtesgadener Land ski resort, lying in the southeastern corner of Bavaria, is very popular among families with children and consists of the six skiing areas of Jenner, Rossfeld, Zinkenkogel, Götschen, Hochschwarzeck and Berchtesgaden. The 40kms of pistes are mainly geared to the intermediate skier and there are also good beginner and advanced slopes.
The resort town of Berchtesgaden is surrounded by majestic peaks rising to heights of 2,713m (Watzmann mountain), and it has an old town feel with its interesting web of streets. Shopping is excellent and there is a variety of accommodation offering 25,000 beds, from four-star hotels to pensions and bed and breakfasts.
Berchtesgadener Land ski resort has 25 pisted slopes divided into 40kms of beginner, intermediate and advanced runs. There are 39 ski lifts able to move over 17,500 skiers per hour and, in addition, Berchtesgadener Land has 75kms of excellent cross-country skiing trails.
Other winter activities and facilities include: snowboarding; tobogganing; luge; bobsled; ice skating (natural); curling; a fitness centre; indoor swimming; three indoor tennis courts/squash courts; ballooning; a mountaineering school; sleigh riding; and a sports centre. There are also concerts and folklore evenings as well as plenty of cafés, bars and discos.
The best snow can usually be had from February to mid-March, while cheaper rates are offered at the beginning and end of the season and in mid-January.
The most convenient way to get to the Berchtesgadener Land ski resort is to fly to Salzburg or Münich airports and hire a car. Trains go from Salzburg train station, with one change, and direct from Münich Airport, via Münich city.
