Chatel ski resort is very near the Swiss border and south of Lake Geneva. It is a favourite ski and snowboard destination for beginners and intermediates and is ideal for those looking for a more secluded and peaceful resort. Chatel has 85kms of prepared runs and is also in easy reach of the other ski resorts of the Portes du Soleil ski region.
Chatel is a quiet and relaxing village in which to spend your après-ski time and is noted for its French rustic charm. The village is small but has a range of shops, banks and supermarkets, while accommodation is mainly in rented private apartments and chalets with a scattering of classier hotels.
There are 49 slopes at Chatel ski resort spread over 85kms of varied terrain, with 15 slopes set aside for beginners; 13 for intermediates; 16 for advanced skiers; and five slopes for professional skiers and snowboarders. Chatel boasts a longest run of eight kilometres and there are 41 lifts with a capacity for over 41,500 people per hour. Additionally, there are 36kms of cross-country trails.
There are numerous other off-slope activities and facilities, including an ice-skating rink, hiking and snowshoeing. In addition, there is a gym, sports centre, sauna and hot tubs. Chatel is a quieter ski resort than many on the Portes circuit, but it does have several bars and restaurants that provide evening entertainment and there are also two night clubs.
The December to April ski season in Chatel has its best snow in February and cheaper weeks at the start and end of the season, and in mid-January.
Most travellers take a flight to Geneva-Cointrin Airport, transfer by train to Thonon-les-Bains, and then take a bus to Chatel. Buses also go from Geneva, while hire car offers the fastest transfer method.
