Host of the 2002 Winter Olympics, Deer Valley is a luxurious ski resort in every sense, from the perfectly groomed and sculpted slopes to the first rate lodgings and delicious cuisine. Unfortunately, snowboarding is not allowed at Deer Valley but the nearby Cottonwood Canyon ski resorts offer plenty of sliding opportunity.
Deer Valley is just a short drive or bus ride from the charming and historical resort town of Park City, and is highly rated for its exceptional services and facilities. Childcare is available here for 2- to 12-year-olds, and there is even a ski valet service. If staying at the resort itself, you have a choice of stylish lodges, and Park City also offers a variety of accommodation.
The 88 slopes at Deer Valley ski resort are divided into 15 per cent for beginners, 50 per cent for intermediates and 35 per cent for experts; thrill-seekers should head for Empire Canyon and the off-piste terrain. Up to 40,000 people per hour can be lifted up the 900-metre vertical to the various slopes, the longest of which is three kilometres. Additionally, there are 20kms of track and skate skiing.
Other winter activities and facilities available at Deer Valley include: snowmobile tours, sleigh rides, ski jumps, luge, bobsled at the Olympic Park, snowshoeing, hot-air ballooning and heliskiing. Après-ski can be enjoyed at the various lodges at the resort; while Park City has shopping, art galleries, theatre, bars and clubs.
The best ski conditions of the December to April ski season can be had in February, and cheaper weeks are available in early December and April. Flying to Salt Lake City and transferring by one of the convenient shuttle buses is the most practical travel option. The free Park City transit buses operate between the resort and Park City.
