Ski and Snowboarding Information for Discovery Basin, USA

Discovery Basin ski resort is situated in southwestern Montana, to the southeast of Missoula, and boasts great terrain, uncrowded slopes, amazing views, and a friendly atmosphere. Located within Deer Lodge National Forest, family-friendly Discovery has great prices and offers a half-pipe for snowboarders.

There is no lodging at the resort itself, but there are plenty of hotels and bed-and-breakfasts available in the towns of Anaconda, Philipsburg and Butte. At the resort base, there is a professional ski school, ski/sports and rental shop.

There are 40 runs at Discovery Basin over a 154-hectare ski domain; they are divided into 33 per cent for beginners, 33 per cent for intermediates, nine per cent for advanced sliders and 25 per cent for experts. The easy and intermediate terrain is on the front of the mountain, while the hard stuff is around the back side. Six lifts provide slope access; the longest run is 3.2kms. In addition, there are five kilometres of groomed cross-country trails at the resort.

Discovery Basin is a bit thin on alternative activities; however, Anaconda has swimming pools fed by hot springs, and horseback riding. Alternatively, the resorts of Big Sky and Bridger Bowl have an array of non-ski facilities. Après-ski at the resort consists of a café and bar, and the surrounding towns have a good selection of bars and eateries.

The November to April ski season at Discovery Basin ski resort has its best snow in February and free snowboarding and skiing on opening day, Christmas day, and the last week of the season. The most practical travel option for getting here is to fly to Missoula or Bert Mooney airports, via Salt Lake City or Denver, and transfer to Discovery by shuttle bus or hire car.
