Ski and Snowboarding Information for Engelberg, Switzerland

Engelberg ski resort is located at the meeting point of three mountain ranges and is an excellent high-altitude ski destination for the broadest range of skiers. Located in central Switzerland, Engelberg boasts spectacular views of Lake Lucerne on clear days and has 82kms of varying slopes, including summer skiing on the challenging Titlis Glacier.

Set in a picturesque valley and surrounded by huge jagged mountain peaks, Engelberg village is a small settlement with an influx of winter tourists and skiers that dwarfs the resident population. There are thousands of beds available in every lodging category, from modest apartments to luxury hotel/resorts.

Engelberg’s 82kms of runs are classified into 30 per cent beginner slopes; 60 per cent, intermediate; and 10 per cent suitable for advanced and expert skiers. The longest run is 12kms. There are 23 lifts with a capacity for over 21,000 skiers per hour. In addition there are 37kms of cross-country trails.

Other winter activities and facilities include: snowboarding; 15kms of skating tracks (natural and artificial); 38kms of winter walking trails; curling; mountaineering; horse-drawn sleigh rides; a sports centre; and indoor tennis and swimming. Nightlife revolves around the town casino, numerous cafés and restaurants, and several bars and discos.

You will find the best snow from early February to well into March in Engelberg’s long December to May ski season. Cheaper weeks are also available, usually at the beginning and end of the season and in mid-January.

Most people fly into Zürich and take the train to Engelberg ski resort, via Lucerne, if not on a package holiday where transfers are usually included (total travel time: two hours, 40 minutes). Hiring a car at the airport is a lot more convenient.
