Family-friendly Flaine is located southeast of Geneva and is linked to three other ski resorts in the Grand Massif ski area. There are 265kms of runs on hand in the region and the skiing is extensive and varied. Slopes are suited to all levels of skiers and snowboarders and there is great off-piste also.
Created in the 1960s and sporting architecture of the time, Flaine has a wide range of facilities and shops and has the added attraction of a traffic-free centre and ski-in, ski-out capabilities. There are over 9,000 beds in hotels, chalets and apartments as well as a good choice of cafés and restaurants.
Flaine's 265kms of pistes are divided into 15 beginner runs; 53 for intermediates; 51 for intermediate to advanced; and 14 for experts. The longest run is an impressive 14kms (Cascades run), and there are many tree-lined runs. Thirty-eight lifts can move over 77,000 people per hour, and, in addition, there are 18kms of cross-country trails.
Other winter activities and facilities include: a snowboarding park, with a half-pipe; ice-skating, in the natural open-air rink; mono-skiing; ice-driving; skidoos; snowshoeing; and paragliding. There is also indoor swimming, sauna, and a sports centre. For nightly entertainment, there are shows at the auditorium, a cinema, and several bars, some with live music.
The November to April ski season at Flaine has its best snow in February/early March and special deals pre-Christmas holidays and towards the end of April.
Of the numerous ways to get to Flaine, including self-drive and long distance rail travel, the best option is to fly to Geneva and take the direct shuttle/ski bus which also runs in the opposite direction.
