Ski and Snowboarding Information for Geilo, Norway

Located midway between Oslo and Bergen and nestled amid fantastic mountain scenery, in the southern part of Norway’s famous ski region, Geilo ski resort has some wonderful snowboarding and skiing with 36 well groomed pistes. It is also well known for its huge range of cross-country trails.

Geilo is a popular year round resort town, with a mixture of fine old buildings and modern facilities, including childcare services and a range of shops. There are thousands of beds on offer in hotels, luxury cabins, camping cabins, boarding houses, chalets and pensions to suit all budgets and preferences.

Thirty-six downhill runs are connected by 19 lift systems and are distributed fairly evenly among beginners, intermediates and advanced and expert snowboarders and skiers. The longest run is two kilometres. One of the main draws of Geilo ski resort is the fabulous array of cross-country trails. There are over 200kms of terrain, 40kms of which is in woodland, 175kms at high altitude, 26kms are prepared for skating and five kilometres are floodlit.

Other winter activities and facilities for non-skiers or for those taking a break from the slopes include: horse-drawn sleigh rides; ice-skating; ice-fishing; tobogganing; waterfall climbing and snowmobiling. Indoor swimming pools, saunas and a fitness centre make up the indoor activities, and après-ski is lively and features numerous cafés and restaurants, and bars and discos.

The November to May ski season at Geilo has its best snow from early February to mid-March and cheaper rates before the Christmas holidays and the month up to February 6. The most practical way to get to Geilo ski resort is to fly to Oslo or Bergen and transfer by train, or hire a car. Return trains to either airport are also frequent.
