Three of the most photographed mountains in Switzerland - the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau - are the spectacular backdrop for several major ski areas. Grindelwald is the largest of these and offers terrific skiing of over 150kms of slopes for novice to advanced skiers. Grindelwald is located south of the Swiss capital, Bern, and Zürich.
Grindelwald village sits at the base of the awesome Eiger, and the setting and scenery are fantastic. The shopping is extensive and there are 50 restaurants and numerous cafés. Accommodation options are wide-ranging, with 11,500 beds available in hotels, chalets and apartments. A ski kindergarten is also available.
The 150kms of pistes are divided into 30 per cent for beginners; 50 per cent, intermediate; and 20 per cent for advanced skiers. The longest run is a whopping 15kms. Grindelwald's array of ski lifts service all slopes, with a capacity for 20,000 people per hour. In addition to the pistes, there are 34kms of cross-country trails.
There are many other winter activities and facilities at the Grindelwald ski resort and, along with Europe's longest sledge run, seven kilometres of skating tracks, and 80kms of winter walking trails, there is also heli-skiing, mountaineering, sleigh riding; snow rafting; snowshoeing; curling; and a sports centre. Aprčs-ski is livelier than in the nearby resorts, with several bars, discos, and hotel entertainments on offer.
The December to April ski season has the best snow from February to early March, and there is also summer skiing on the Jungfraujoch Glacier.
The most practical way to get to Grindelwald ski resort is to fly to Zürich and take a train to the resort. There is a change at Interlaken and the journey normally takes about three hours. Hiring a car at the airport is the most convenient option.
