Located deep in the Montafon Valley, in the province of Vorarlberg, High Montafon is a group of ski resorts for those who prefer a more secluded skiing experience on quality slopes. There is a great mixture of runs here for skiers of all abilities.
There are several Alpine villages at varying altitudes (900m to 1,430m) with the emphasis on a quieter après-ski and nightlife, which is centred mainly on the larger hotels. St Gallenkirch and Gortipohl, however, have some lively bars and discos.
There are over 100kms of pisted runs featuring slopes for all levels of skill at Montafon ski resort; the longest run is 11kms. Ten per cent are suitable for beginners (red); 30 per cent for intermediate skiers (green); 40 per cent for advanced (blue); and 20 per cent for expert skiers (black). There are 30kms of groomed cross-country ski trails in the valley and a further 15kms of high-altitude trails around the Silvretta dam.
Other winter activities and facilities away from the slopes include: mountaineering; 12kms of romantic walks and hiking trails; snowboarding; mono-skiing; snow-trekking; sleigh riding; indoor swimming; sauna and paragliding (summer). Nightlife involves several bars, including ice bars, and discos as well as a café with live music.
High Montafon's best snow can be seen towards the end of February to mid-March and there are special deals in January and near the season's end.
The most practical and possibly the cheapest way to get to High Montafon is to fly to Zürich and take the train from the airport, changing at Bludenz for the train to Schruns, from where buses and taxis go to St Gallenkirch and beyond.
