Located in one of the prime skiing areas of Austria, Kitzbühel ski resort is popular for its 150kms of superb tree-lined slopes. There are 56 runs mainly catering to the skier with an intermediate level of skill.
Kitzbühel town has lots of character, with its 12th century stone wall and attractive architecture, and boasts a large amount of accommodation, from budget to luxury. The town really comes alive at night with a huge number of bars and discos to choose from. There is always a lively and fun atmosphere here.
There are 158kms of pistes and 56 runs; the longest run is 6.8kms. Of these, 30 per cent are beginner; 30 per cent intermediate; 30 per cent advanced intermediate; and 10 per cent expert. Trail skiing in Kitzbühel is strictly intermediate with a few black stretches. For snowboarders, there is a permanent 450m boarder cross-course with 100m of vertical, 100m half-pipe, and 14 obstacles for competition on Brunellenfeld.
For a break from the slopes, there are plenty of other activities on offer including: hot air balloon trips; ice-skating (artificial); horse-drawn sleigh rides; curling; hiking; indoor swimming and tennis; squash; paragliding; saunas; and snowshoeing. There are also plenty of bars and discos to choose from, as well as a cinema.
The best conditions of the season are mid-February to mid-March and the cheapest weeks are early December up to December 19 and mid-March onwards.
There are a number of practical options for getting to Kitzbühel ski resort, depending on which of the three airports you fly into: Salzburg, Munich or Innsbruck. The most convenient option is to fly to Innsbruck and take the train via Wörgl.
