Located south of Lake Geneva, near the Portes du Soleil ski region, La Chapelle d'Abondance ski resort offers 75kms of pisted runs and is an ideal alternative getaway from the busier resorts of its large neighbour. Families and beginners are particularly welcome and snowboarders will also find some good off-piste.
La Chapelle d'Abondance is a quaint farming community tucked away in a picturesque valley on the edge of the Portes du Soleil ski area. There are only 730 permanent residents in this quiet village and over 6,500 beds available in hotels, pensions and traditional wooden cottages.
Snowboarding and skiing is for all levels at La Chapelle, with and emphasis on the beginner; there are 17 slopes stretching over 75kms of superb terrain. The longest piste is four kilometres and, together with the other slopes, is served by 12 lift systems. In addition to the pisted snowboarding and skiing, there is great off-piste terrain and 20kms of cross-country trails.
For those non-skiers or for a change from the snowboarding and skiing, La Chapelle d’Abondance offers: winter hiking, mountaineering, ice-skating, horseback riding and fishing. Other, more relaxing pursuits include soaking in the thermal baths and swimming. Après-ski is limited and mainly offered in the larger hotels.
The best snow conditions of the December to late-March/April ski season at La Chapelle d'Abondance ski resort are in February, while cheaper weeks are on offer pre-Christmas holidays and in March.
The most practical travel option for reaching La Chapelle d'Abondance is to fly to Geneva and transfer by Skibus, or take the train from the airport to Thonon-les-Bains, from where coaches go to the resort.
