Leukerbad ski resort lies to the east of Lake Geneva and south of the capital, Bern, in the region of Valais. Leukerbad is popular with beginner to advanced skiers, and for the health benefits of the local thermal baths. With 50kms of pistes and plenty of off-piste, as well as a huge range of sporting activities, Leukerbad is an excellent winter destination.
Noted since Roman times for its curative thermal waters, the spa town of Leukerbad is blessed with four million litres of flowing hot springs per day. Located at the end of the Dala Valley, the village has plenty of accommodation on offer, with over 8,000 beds available, and a range of sporting shops.
The longest run at Leukerbad is six kilometres and there are 50kms of groomed slopes divided into 40 per cent beginner runs; 50 per cent for intermediates; and 10 per cent suited to advanced skiers. Seventeen ski lifts are able to move up to 12,000 people per hour. In addition to pisted skiing, there are 33kms of cross-country tracks.
When not skiing or bathing in thermal waters there are other activities and facilities, including: snowboarding, with a terrain park and half-pipe; 40kms of winter walking paths; ice-skating (natural and artificial); curling; mono-skiing; mountaineering; and paragliding. Indoor activities and facilities include: a fitness centre, swimming, tennis and golf. There are bars and discos, but nightlife is mainly hotel and restaurant-based.
The December to April ski season has excellent snow in February and early March, and special rates pre-Christmas, post-New Year celebrations, and in mid-March.
The quickest and most convenient way of getting to and from Leukerbad ski resort is to fly to Geneva and hire a car. For those on a budget, and not on a package holiday, there are regular train/bus combination transfers to the resort.
