Ski and Snowboarding Information for Macugnaga, Italy

Located in the western Alps at the foot of the awe-inspiring eastern face of Monte Rosa, Macugnaga - Monte Rosa is a compact and charming ski resort that boasts some fantastic pistes. The 38kms of downhill runs are mostly beginner and intermediate-level orientated, while snowboarders will be delighted with the range of off-piste runs.

Macugnaga village offers spectacular views over Switzerland from any number of vantage points and the resort has a definite Swiss air about it. There is plenty to do in the village for non-skiers, including shopping and visiting the much-vaunted museum. There are 3,000 beds to choose from in hotels, chalets and apartments.

The 38kms of pistes at Macugnaga - Monte Rosa are divided into 15 slopes, with over 80 per cent of the runs suitable for beginners and intermediates, and just under 20 per cent for advanced skiers and snowboarders. The longest run is seven kilometres, and 12 lifts can move up to 7,800 people per hour. There are 21kms of easy to advanced cross-country trails, as well as a large off-piste area through woodlands.

Macugnaga - Monte Rosa ski resort also offers non-ski activities and facilities, including: natural ice-skating, ice hockey, paragliding, mountaineering, hiking and heli-skiing. Alternatively, history buffs can visit the excellent museum. Restaurants are top rate, with some offering evening entertainment; additionally, several bars and a nightclub provide late night entertainment.

The December to April ski season at Macugnaga - Monte Rosa has good snow conditions all season, particularly so in February, and cheaper rates can be had at the beginning and towards the end of the season.

The most practical way to get to Macugnaga - Monte Rosa is to fly to Milan-Malpensa Airport and transfer by dedicated Skibus, or take the train and bus combination. Hiring a car at the airport will shave an hour off the transfer time.
