Ski and Snowboarding Information for Malbun / Steg, Switzerland

Liechtenstein's premier ski resort of Malbun, and nearby Steg, nestles amid the mountains in the country's southeast. As well as two ski schools, there are 21kms of good runs for novice skiers and snowboarders and more difficult ones for the experienced. While Malbun undoubtedly has the best runs, Steg is renowned for its superb cross-country skiing.

Both resorts are fairly high up, with Malbun lying at 1,600m and Steg at 1,300m; they have a distinctly laid-back atmosphere. Malbun is the largest town and has two good ski schools and a handful of shops. Lodgings are limited, with only 700 beds to choose from in slope-side hotels. Vaduz offers plenty more options.

Malbun and Steg's 21kms of downhill pistes are classified into 50 per cent suitable for beginners; 40 per cent, intermediate; and 10 per cent for advanced skiers and snowboarders. The longest run is two kilometres, and there are seven ski lifts operating over all runs, able to lift up to 6,800 people per hour. In addition, there are four cross-country loops at Steg, including a three-kilometre lighted trail.

Other winter activities and facilities include: a snowboarding terrain park and a half-pipe; a one kilometre toboggan run; a well maintained network of winter walking paths; ice-skating (natural); snowshoeing; and sleigh riding. There is also indoor swimming, a fitness centre, sauna and solarium. Nightlife is generally limited to Malbun's restaurants, hotels and nightclub.

The December to March ski season has its best snow in February and its cheapest weeks pre-Christmas and mid-January.

Malbun and Steg ski resorts are best accessed by flying into Zurich and taking a regular train/bus combination via Sargans and Vaduz. The most convenient way here is to hire a car at Zürich International Airport.
