Montafon Valley is located at the southern part of Vorarlberg and is very popular for skiers of all abilities due to a variety of skiing terrain and the 11 separate resorts in the area. There are over 200kms of runs which can all be visited on one ski pass.
All resorts in Montafon Valley are in a beautiful setting surrounded by three mountain ranges; visitors can choose to stay in a town with a lively après-ski and nightlife, or opt for a more sedate hamlet. There are 80 hotels and inns, 80 pensions, 210 private pensions and 780 apartment-houses, totalling over 18,000 beds.
Montafon boasts over 209kms of pisted runs with 54 per cent suitable for beginners, 32 per cent for intermediate skiers, and 14 per cent for experts. The longest run is 12kms and there are 65 cable cars and chairlifts. Ski touring is available on Silvretta's white glaciers and there are 100kms of cross-country skiing tracks with 12 trails.
Non-skiing activities are numerous and varied, including: 290kms of winter foot and snowshoe hiking paths; sports and natural toboggan runs (some floodlit); curling; ice-skating (artificial); sleigh riding; sauna; 24 indoor swimming pools (partly public); and two indoor tennis courts.
The best skiing conditions in Montafon Valley ski resort are from mid-February to mid-March and the cheapest periods are the week up to December 19 and the last month of the season.
A number of airports service Montafon Valley, with Zürich being the closest international airport and the best option. Trains go from the airport and run as far as Schruns, with a change in Bludenz. If you can get a cheap flight to Innsbruck, the Skibus goes to the resorts direct from the terminal.
