Located on the French part of the expansive Milky Way ski region, Montgenevre is the oldest ski resort in France and is famous for its picturesque setting, traditional buildings, reliable snow and friendliness.
Montgenevre ski resort has numerous accommodation options, from luxury hotels to cosy inns. The old stone buildings house some delightful cafés and quality restaurants featuring both local and European cuisine. The pleasant ancient streets are interesting to wander through, the main highlight being the ruins of a medieval fortress. There are also several shops selling local wares, as well as a post office, a pharmacy, a supermarket, a doctor, a cash machine and childcare facilities.
Montgenevre’s slopes comprise 59 pistes, with 25 green and 23 blue, which explains the resort’s attractiveness to beginners and intermediates. The remaining 11 runs are for advanced skiers, and there are no black runs. In total, Montgenevre has 100kms of runs, served by 38 lifts which create a lift capacity of 28,760 people per hour.
The longest run is seven kilometres, with a vertical drop of 850m. While the serviced slopes may not be all that difficult for experts, there is plenty of off-piste action to keep skiers and snowboarders excited, including heli-skiing. In addition there are 17kms of cross-country trails that lead to Claviere (Italy) or to the nearby Vallee de la Claree, and for snowboarders there is an excellent snowboard park.
Montgenevre is not famous for its nightlife, but there is a decent selection of bars, clubs and discos to keep you entertained in the evenings, with the most popular activity being sipping hot wine at the end of a bar. Other après-ski activities available around the resort include ice-skating, tobogganing, paragliding, snowshoe hiking. There is also a cinema and a fitness centre at the resort.
The ski season at Montgenevre runs from December to April, with reliable snow falls throughout the season. Bargains can be had at either extreme of the season, as well as mid-January.
Most visitors to Montgenevre ski resort arrive by train or by air. Turin Airport (Italy) is just 1 hour, 30 minutes away, while Briancon railway station is 12kms from the resort.
