Oberammergau ski resort is a paradise for beginners and intermediate skiers and is located just north of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and 90kms southwest of Münich. Oberammergau is a great family ski destination and many are also attracted by its superb cross-country trails.
The town, lying at 850m above sea level, is a very pleasant place to stay, with its idyllic setting among mountains and forests. Oberammergau has long been known for its woodcarvings and the town’s shops have some fine examples. Oberammergau’s hotels and other accommodations are well-appointed.
There are 16kms of high quality downhill runs divided into 37 pe rcent beginner pistes; 37 per cent, intermediate; and 24 per cent suited for advanced skiers. The total lift capacity is 12,000 people per hour on nine ski lifts. There are also more than 55kms of well prepared cross-country trails with varied gradients.
Other winter activities and facilities include: snowboarding; tobogganing; hiking; horse-drawn sleigh rides; ice skating (natural); curling; paragliding; a fitness centre; and a sports centre with indoor swimming and tennis. The recreation centre, the Wellenberg, with open-air pools, fountains, sauna, solarium, and restaurant, is one of the Alps' premier wellness centres.
Oberammergau’s folklore evenings are supplemented by a lively nightlife.
Oberammergau ski resort’s best snow can be had in February and special deals are offered at the beginning and end of the season, and in mid-January.
The most practical way to get to Oberammergau is to fly to Münich and transfer by train via the city and the town of Murnau. The most convenient way, and a favourite with many travellers, is to fly to Münich and transfer by hire car.
