Overall, Saalbach / Hinterglemm-Leogang is a top Austrian destination that has good skiing and lively resorts ideally suited to the young and to families. The villages of Saalbach and Hinterglemm share an extensive network of lifts which link the resorts and both sides of the valley. There are 20kms of pisted runs in total, catering to all skiing levels.
Saalbach / Hinterglemm-Leogang villages blend the traditional alpine spirit with modern conveniences. Saalbach is the most attractive of the three with its car-free streets and busy après-ski and nightlife, while quieter Hinterglemm has the greatest collection of hotels at the end of the valley. There are over 17,000 beds with a variety of accommodation options.
There are 60 runs here with 200kms of pistes and a longest run of seven kilometres. Beginners have 45 per cent of the slopes; 47 per cent are for intermediates; and eight per cent are suitable for advanced skiers. There are 55 lifts with a capacity for 83,400 skiers. There are also 12kms of cross-country trails, from Hinterglemm to Talschluss; while experts ski off-piste.
Other winter activities and après-ski facilities include: snowboarding, with 13kms of boarders-only pistes, two half-pipes, jumps and excellent tuition; a floodlit toboggan run; curling; horse-drawn sleigh riding; ice-skating (natural); indoor swimming and tennis/squash; paragliding; and a sauna and solarium. A lively and friendly social scene is induced by 23 coffeehouses, 29 bars, 20 ice bars, and 14 discos.
The cheapest weeks for skiing in Saalbach / Hinterglemm-Leogang are mid-December, mid-January and late March/April. The best snow is usually had from mid-February to mid-March (high season).
The most convenient way to get to Saalbach / Hinterglemm-Leogang ski resorts is to fly to either Munich (180kms) or Salzburg (100kms) and hire a car. The most practical way is to take a train from Salzburg Airport to Zell am See (near Saalbach / Hinterglemm) and bus it from there.
