A distinctly unique ski resort experience, Saint Veran proudly promotes its qualities as a traditional rural mountain market village with an authentic Dauphine atmosphere. It has a reputation as one of the most scenic villages in France, and has both reliable weather and snowfall.
Accommodation for 1,800 visitors is provided by comfortable mountain chalets and cottages, contributing to the traditional medieval ambience of the town. Saint Veran ski resort is geared towards families, with the younger members catered to by nurseries and ski kindergartens, thus freeing the rest to enjoy the slopes to their fullest. The village has some excellent and interesting historic architecture, best observed by taking a slow walk through the quiet streets.
There are 38kms of ski slopes at Saint Veran, consisting of a range of ski runs suitable for all, with emphasis on intermediate to advanced levels. Of the 31 runs, there are seven green, seven blue, 14 red and three black runs. There are 55kms of cross-country routes around the resort and a further 200kms in the Queyras area.
Fourteen ski lifts, along with one chairlift, service the resort. The highest lift reaches 1,750m with a vertical drop of 1,050m. The village itself sits at 2,042m and is surrounded by mountains reaching 3,000m. Additionally, there is access to eight other ski resorts in the area.
The limited après-ski options at Saint Veran reflect the village’s desire to remain as authentic as possible. There are a few excellent restaurants and a couple of cosy bars in which to spend the evening, however, things close down early. During the day there is plenty to do, with great shopping for traditional crafts, some interesting historic buildings and museums, as well as recreational alternatives to the slopes such as sleighing, tobogganing, snowshoeing and paragliding.
The season at Saint Veran is from mid-December to the end of March, and a sunny, dry climate makes for excellent snow conditions throughout the season. The cheapest times are at the beginning of the season and non-holiday times in January.
Saint Veran is located 170kms (three hours) from Grenoble International Airport, while Mondauphin/Guillestre train station can be accessed by connection from Valence TGV station.
