Silvaplana is located in the stunningly beautiful canton of Graubunden, sitting at the foot of the marvellous Corvatsch Mountain, by the largest of the Engadine lakes. It boasts links to the world famous resort of St Moritz and is a pleasant, calming village with plenty of ski on offer.
The resort of Silvaplana sits at an elevation of 1,870m and has exceptional air quality. The longest ski run in the region makes this a wonderful spot, and the visitor can experience a range of ski runs from rugged terrain to flowing, well groomed slopes.
There are 6,000 beds in chalets, apartments and hotels plus mountain restaurants, bars, cafés and a nightclub keeping visitors amused into the early hours. A zoo is another attraction not to be missed at the resort.
There are 65kms of runs at Silvaplana, consisting of rugged terrain and groomed slopes. The runs are suitable for all levels, with 35 per cent of runs for the beginner, 25 per cent intermediate and 40 per cent for advanced skiers. The ambitious 10-kilometre run at Silvaplana is the longest in the region, with the top elevation at the resort being 3,303m and the vertical descent 1,433m.
There are 14 lifts at Silvaplana with an uplift capacity of over 1,000 skiers per hour. Throughout the linked region 150kms of cross-country provide some challenging options, while a snowboard terrain park and half-pipe give snowboarders even more space to board.
As for non-ski activities and après-ski, the resort of Silvaplana offers commendable eating and drinking options on and off the mountain. There are also cafés, bars and a nightclub offering late night entertainment. Alternative leisure activities available at the resort include curling, natural ice-skating, squash, mountaineering, paragliding, sleigh riding, plus a sports centre with further non-ski activities.
The season at Silvaplana runs from mid-November to May, and the resort has some cheap options on offer when booking in certain weeks and with certain hotels.
Silvaplana is three hours from the international airport at Zürich, from where you can hire a vehicle and self-drive to the resort. Alternatively, catch a train to St Moritz and transfer to a regular 10-minute bus service to the resort of Silvaplana.
