Tignes is one of the highest of the Alpine resorts and features year round snowboarding and skiing in some parts. It is linked with neighbouring Val d'Isere to form the famed Espace Killy ski area, offering 300kms of quality snowboard and ski terrain.
Tignes is comprised of a series of modern, purpose-built and traditional resort villages at high altitude, behind a huge lake. Accommodation is wide ranging and provided in luxury hotels, traditional chalets and more affordable apartments. Good childcare makes Tignes appealing to families.
There are 300kms of pistes to choose from in the Espace Killy ski area, with some quality beginner slopes and excellent ski schools. Additionally, the intermediate and advanced slopes are particularly extensive. Chairlifts and gondolas provide access to all pistes and, in addition to the pisted runs, there are endless off-piste challenges for thrill-seeking snowboarders and skiers.
Other non-skiing activities and facilities at Tignes ski resort include ice-skating and a bowling alley, as well as a modern sports centre featuring aerobics, squash and sauna. Après-ski can be sedate in the villages, but all offer a reasonable choice of quality eateries, bars and discos.
The November to May ski season at Tignes ski resort has its best snow conditions in early March and lowest rates in mid-December and April. The Grande Motte Glacier has year round skiing. There are several airports in the vicinity, with Geneva-Cointrin offering the most practical option and transfer times. Hiring a car is the quickest transfer option, while bus transfers are also convenient.
