Toggenburg is the largest ski area in this part of Switzerland and is situated by the seven impressive fairytale peaks of the Churfirsten mountains. The resort offers an ideal escape for families, skiers and snowboarders in search of good quality slopes.
Home to the double Olympic ski jumping gold medallist Simon Ammann and perfect for families and children, Toggenburg is an authentic ski village offering charming accommodation as well as flea markets, concerts, a dairy museum and some wonderful mountain restaurants serving up the typical winter raclette dish.
There are 55kms of groomed slopes in Toggenburg, plus a host of off-piste runs ranging in difficulty, with 25 per cent of beginner slopes, 50 per cent intermediate and 25 per cent advanced. The resort’s longest run measures seven kilometres and the top elevation is 2,262m, with a vertical descent of 1,212m. Nineteen lifts, including a funicular and tram, service the resort, with an uplift capacity of 17,000 skiers per hour. There are some great boarding facilities for snowboarders, including two terrain parks plus snowboard and ski tuition by 80 instructors.
Traditional après-ski facilities, such as raclette dining and winter concerts are main attractions at Toggenburg, while non-ski activities include such pastimes as: curling, horse-drawn sleigh rides, natural ice-skating, swimming, sauna and night skiing. Sports facilities for tennis, squash and bowling are also available, as are 35kms of winter walking trails affording spectacular views of the unspoilt region. Suitably lively bars and discos provide late night entertainment, while the mountain restaurants serve up traditional cuisine.
The season begins in late November in Toggenburg, and runs through until April with the best conditions around the height of the season. Cheap family deals are available with great discounts for children.
The resort of Toggenburg is 1 hour, 30 minutes from Zürich and can be accessed by road or by connecting train and bus service. Alternatively, catch the Eurostar service to Paris and then the night train to Zürich. Connect from there via train and bus to the resort itself.
