Valmorel ski resort encompasses a large ski area of 162kms (shared with St Francois) and is a perfect resort for learners and families. Not far from Chambery and south of Lake Geneva, Valmorel also has good off-piste powder for snowboarders.
The purpose-built village of Valmorel has ski-in/ski-out accessibility and, despite its modernity, it is well laid-out and features traditional-looking buildings constructed from stone and wood, and a traffic-free centre. Accommodation is wide ranging in hotels, pensions and chalets, with slope-side accommodation available.
Valmorel is lift-linked with St Francois and the terrain is divided into 28 beginner, 32 intermediate, 15 advanced and eight expert runs. Beginners have a separate ski area and thrill-seekers can enjoy some challenging off-piste terrain. All pistes are served by 34 lifts and there are 20kms of cross-country trails.
Snowboarders have a fun park, a gentle boarder cross-type course and a half-pipe, as well as decent intermediate runs. Other winter activities and facilities at Valmorel ski resort include: paragliding, tobogganing, marked winter pathways around the resort, mountaineering (guides available) and snowshoeing. Après-ski is fairly lively, but not excessive, and features bars, traditional pubs and discos.
The December to May ski season has its best snow conditions in early March; while the lowest rates are in mid-December and mid/late April. There are many options for getting to Valmorel, the most practical being a flight to Lyon or Geneva and a train and bus combination transfer, via Moutiers. There are frequent return buses and trains to both airports.
