Zell Am See/Kaprun ski resorts are very popular with intermediate skiers and those who like to ski in the summer. These two resorts lie at the heart of the Europa Sport region, which offers not only excellent cruising runs, but also a good range of blue runs at the top of the mountain, with a total of 130kms of pisted runs, 80 of which are at Zell.
The main town of Zell Am See has lovely views of its lake from the medieval town and the slopes above. Several medieval towers, a Romanesque parish church, and a 16th century château add atmosphere. There are over 13,500 guest beds in a variety of accommodation, from pensions to five-star hotels.
Including the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier, Zell Am See/Kaprun boasts 130kms of groomed slopes, with 38 per cent suitable to beginners; 50 per cent, intermediate; and 12 per cent for advanced skiers. The longest run is six kilometres and 57 lifts have a capacity for over 79,000 skiers per hour. There are also extensive cross-country trails with 40kms in Zell Am See and 18kms in Kaprun.
Other activities include: excellent snowboarding at Schmittenhöhe, and a boarder cross park and fun park at Kaprun; tobogganing; sleigh rides; ice-skating; hang-gliding; paragliding; scenic flights and hot air ballooning. There is also a sports hall and a fitness centre, with indoor swimming and tennis. Plentiful coffeehouses, cafés, bars and discos make up the resorts' lively nightlife.
The best snow can be had from early February to early March with cheap rates offered early and late in the season, early January to early February, and March 8 to 23.
The most practical way of getting to Zell Am See/Kaprun ski resort is to fly to Salzburg, or Munich, and take a train to Zell; trains go from Munich Airport and from Salzburg city. The most convenient transfer option would be to hire a car, unless you have free transfers on your package deal.
